The following is a great commentary featured on Westword Blog talking about the dangerous culture we still live in that seems to feed off exploiting artists. The words of the commentary ring true no matter what end of the financial spectrum you find yourself in. From my own experiences, I can tell you it is a thin line between playing a show for free because it is a genuine opportunity or a worthy cause, and outright artist exploitation. It has to with respect and being aware of your own power. It’s a tough road when you’re dealing with non-profits, festivals, and promoters who want to dick you out of money because you’re not a big name act. For myself, it comes down to respect. If you are approaching me to do a job, and you respect my work, I would expect you to compensate me fairly. I’m not saying gimme a condo in the upper east-side and a 24k gold Lambo, but you wouldn’t hire anyone else to do a job and them expect them to do it for free, so why do we think its ok to do that to artists?
↪ "It really sunk in, the kind of resilience the slaves had and just the strength of the people who survived it, ya know"
YUP, the physical, psychological, emotional toll of slavery has never really been FULLY grasped because unless you put yourself in a slave’s shoes, the level of dehumanization done to them cannot be FULLY comprehended…..What was done to them is HORRIBLE to infinity….When we think we have a feeling what is was like, our mind is barely grasping 25% of it….
